Mag.ing. Mate Čarija participated on a workshop Molecular Phylogenetics & Evolution that took place in the first week of May at University of Mainz, Federal Republic of Germany. The workshop was organized as a part of continuous cooperation between the Univesity of Mainz and University of Zagreb. This was the first time that students from Zagreb came to visit their colleagues and participate together in such workshop. Workshop provided theoretical background in phylogenetic analysis and assignments by using nucleotide and amino acid sequences as raw data. Mate Čarija participated on this workshop as a PhD student from Faculty of Science in Zagreb.

This year, along with our colleagues, we also participated on the Science Festival that took place at our Institute 05.05.2022. Through unique subject: Life of the Mediterranean, a series of lectures and workshops were held, and due to the lack of epidemic measures, the event caused a great attention and was very well visited. The subject of our oral presentation was Coexistence of the living and non-living- viruses in Mediterranean plants where dr.Hančević and mag.ing. Čarija presented the importance of plant viruses and the threat they represent to Mediterranean crops.

Today is the World Health Day, and we all know how important and beneficial grapevine is for human health. The students of the Health School from Split, Karmen and Merima, about whom we wrote earlier, and who were shortly part of the GRAPE-PATH3 project, prepared a short audio-video presentation entitled: “Grapevine and Health” which they presented on 07.04. 2022 at the E Medica Regional Congress for World Health Day. In the presentation, they presented their work conducted at the Institute.

We congratulate them, as well as their professor on the exceptional presentation and work, and we cordially greet them until, hopefully, some other occation when we will cooperate again!

Scientific paper on the presence and effect of different viruses in our most important red varieties Plavac Mali, as well as the genomic variability of the most common among them, the GLRaV-3 virus, was published in the journal Pathogens (IF = 4,531; Microbiology). This is the first scientific paper of a doctoral student Mate Čarija as a leading author, and the GRAPE-PATH3 team congratulates him!

Another year comes to its end, successful and dynamic as any of the previous ones. Numerous assignments were achieved, goals accomplished and every day was challenging in its own way to acquire new knowledge. We attended virtual conferences, we attended live conferences whenever the pandemic allowed us to. By using quantitative PCR method we have been describing virus infection in plants, and by continuing experiments on plants we are getting a clear image on how plant reacts to viral presence.

We are entering the final year of our project and with great joy we remember all the happy moments that lead us here and are looking forward to the 2022. To all of our readers we wish a merry Christmas and a happy New Year, with kind regards from the GRAPE-PATH 3 project team!   

It’s always dynamic in our labs, so this week was’t any different. Karmen Amižić and Merima Zulić, pupils of the Medical School in Split, joined our daily activities since they expressed their desire to get acquainted with the actual laboratory work that takes place at our Institute as part of the GRAPE-PATH3 project. During their stay, they learned to work with basic tools in a Microbiological laboratory. They also learned advanced spectrophotometric methods that are used to determine the concentration of photosynthetic pigments in samples of healthy and virus-infected grapevines.

Thank you Karmen and Merima for your help. We hope you had a pleasant and  educative stay with us and wish you prosperous education in the future. We have no doubt you will be an excellent students!

We participated in the 56th Croatian and 16th International Symposium on Agriculture, which was held in Vodice from 6 to 10 September 2021. At the symposium we presented some of the results obtained on the GRAPE-PATH3 project. An oral presentation entitled “Presence of the virus in Dalmatian indigenous grapevine varieties” was held by Mate Čarija as part of the Viticulture and Enology section.

It was great to see in person and talk with the colleagues after long time!

We participated to on-line organized World Microbe Forum (20-24. June) by American Society for MIcrobiology and Federation of European Microbiological Societies. In the form of iPoster entitled: GLRaV-3 Genetic Variants in Indigenous Vines of Mediterranean Croatia by Katarina Hančević, Pasquale Saldarelli, Mate Čarija, Silvija Černi , Goran Zdunić, Ana Mucalo and Tomislav Radić we presented spme of the results gained on the GRAPE-PATH3 project.

Two more oral presentations of the results gained on the GRAPE-PATH3 project were presented as a part of a seminar organized by the Institute of Adriatic Crops, entitled “Friday Seminars at 13”. First lecture on Friday, 21.05. was held by PhD student Mate  Čarija, under the title: “Sanitary status of Plavac Mali and genetic variability of Grapevine leafroll-associated virus 3”, and the second entitled “GRAPE-PATH3, how far we have come” was held by Dr. Katarina Hančević on 18.06.2021. Together with colleagues, we actively participated in the Science Festival, which took place this year from 10 to 15 May. At the Institute for Adriatic Crops, we have prepared a virtual workshop through the ZOOM platform, on Friday, May 14th. Through joint activities: Mediterranean agriculture and forestry – research at the Institute for Adriatic Crops we tried to bring science closer to the children and adults by helping them understand how important is the science we conduct at the Institute in today’s society and human lives. Our team participated with the subtopic “Grapevine viruses” where Mate presented about the knowledge and importance of the viruses for the grapevine growing, and the importance of the research we perform on the project GRAPE-PATH3!
